Setting foot into a CrossFit box for the very first time can be extremely intimidating for a lot of us but that first step is also the most important. You may have driven by this place every day for the past 6 months and yet you’re still too nervous to go in. Maybe you’ll attend one of their free introduction classes? Or maybe you’ll just wing it and commit to a month and see what happens? You have no idea what you’re doing and you have no idea what to expect. Maybe you’ll be really bad at it or worse, embarrass yourself and have to move your whole life out of this town. Relax! You’re going to be ok! If you ask any CrossFit athlete what their first experience was like, I’m sure you’ll get a few laughs.

Here’s how to get started:

Attend the trial class

Even better, bring a friend or a family member. Trying out a new fitness regime can be scary so why not do it with familiar faces around you? These classes are fun and are aimed towards first timers so don’t be intimidated. Everyone else in that class is probably just as nervous as you are! You’ll find it informative as we (coaches) try to give you as much as we can within the 1 hour of class to fully experience CrossFit. The coach will go through how a regular class typically runs and teach you a few different movements and exercises for the hour. You’ll then be put through a metabolic conditioning (metcon) workout which is essentially a high intensity circuit workout. You’ll get sweaty and you’ll love it.

Ask to attend a regular class

The introduction classes are a lot of fun but you can’t truly feel the CrossFit environment until you attend a regular class. This is also a good way to meet some regulars at the gym and chat about their CrossFit experience. They’ve most likely been in your shoes! However, this may not be possible at all gyms as they have beginner programs (on ramp) you must complete before attending a regular class. If that’s the case, do the beginners program and get familiar with the movements and the people that way!

If you like it so far, commit to one month

There is quite a bit of a learning curve when you first start because there are so many different movements to learn. By committing to a month, you’ll have the opportunity to perform movements more often, get better at them and more comfortable with them. Committing to one month will let you experience CrossFit as a whole and let’s you see how it can fit in your life and routine.

What to expect in the first month of CrossFit:

  • You’ll be sore.
  • There are a lot of movements to learn.
  • There is a lot of lingo to learn.
  • You may not be able to do what everyone else is doing – but that’s ok, you’re still learning.
  • You’ll get callouses on your hands.
  • You’ll rip one of those callouses (yes, it hurts but you’re tough.. or you’ll just have to wait a day or two to wash your hair).
  • You’ll have to do math when adding weights or when keeping count of your score.
  • You’ll be on YouTube for hours trying to learn different CrossFit movements.
  • You’ll choreograph a number of different victory dances for when you get your first muscle up or when you’re about to hit a personal record (PR – there we go with that CrossFit lingo).
  • You’ll make great friends.
  • You’ll feel more and more confident with each week.
  • You’ll feel stronger and stronger with each week.
  • You’ll feel more and more fit with each week.

So what are you waiting for? Stop driving by that CrossFit gym on your way home from work and take that first step through their doors. It may just be the beginning of something great!
